Papua New Guinea LikLik Story
The Panga woman, with red face paint and tear-like designs in blue and red, and the Mendiwarrior, with yellow, red and black makings wearing a headbandof nassa shells on his forehead, are both from the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.
The Mendi tribe holds a special ritual called he "Timp", in which the men of the tribe build a spirit house. Pigs are brought to the house and slaughtered as a sacrifice to the spirits, then cooked and eaten. Once the ceremony is over, the men of the tribe burn the house and all of its contents.
The Duk Duks, with their wide-eyed, black masks and costumes of layered leaves, formed their tribe as a secret law-enforcement society in the Tolia community in Rabaul, East New Britain. Today their dance is performed more for ceremonial reasons at special events. However, the secrec of the Duk Duks remains and only the men and initiated boys may ener the secret society of the Duk Duks.
